This is about Kalidasa’s work Kumarasambhava-कुमारसम्भव, a Sanskrit epic poem;

Think of the current day public including me; we claim credit for things we have never thought of even in our wildest dream; when we get a train companion between Mumbai and Chennai, we make our unfortunate companion feel at the time of alighting that he/she has been travelling with a Mahapurusha/mahapurushi(महापुरुष/ महापुरुषी-mean eminent man/woman).

The objective of our ancestors was to give the best; names are immaterial after we leave this earth.

I remember the lines from the film “ Billa” with Ajeet in the lead.

The song goes like this ( this is sung by the Don in the film; I love the tone and style and the way,  this film was made ):

Meaning

(People) came and vanished yesterday,

None has any trace today,

What is your and my relationship?

Real happiness is in Bondless Relationships!

So our elders were very clear to leave something good to the next generation.

Back to Kumarasambava: this is about the birth of my Lieutenant, Lord Muruga ( Kartigeya);

For those who love poetry it is a feast.

Canto 1 Stanza 8 reads like this:

This part is about the birth place of my Mother Parvathi Devi, the Great Himalaya Mountain

It is made  in a way of glorifying somebody/something in III person narration.

यः पूरयन्कीचकरन्ध्रभागान्दरीमुखोत्थेन समीरणेन।

उद्गास्यतामिच्छति किन्नराणां तानप्रदायित्वमिवोपगन्तुम्॥ १-८

Transliteration

Yah poorayankeechakarandhabhaaghaandareemuKoaththaena sameeraNaenaI

udhagaasyataamichchati kinnaraaNaam taanapradaayithvamivoapagantumII  1-8

word by word meaning

 yaha=that ( he who is)

pooraya( pru is the root word- पॄ-fill

keechaka- कीचक—hollow bamboo

randhra- रन्ध्र—hole

bhaagan—part, place

daree—दरी—cave

mukha—mouth

uttAena—(utta उत्थ-rising) rising from; instrumental case in Sanskrit

sameeranaena—(समीरण sameerana means setting in motion, causing activity); here some authors say saameeranene- सामीरण—relating to the wind

ud- उद्-above, high

gaa—song

as- अस्—shoot at

(udgaasya means to sing in a high pitch)

itchati—wishing

kinnaraaNaam—( किन्नर—kinnara means heavenly music) of heavenly music ( is in 6 th Vibhakti of Sanskrit grammar)

taana—तान—tone( this is Shruti associated with music)

pradaayitvam—( प्रदा—prada-gift; इत्वन्—itvan—going)-means presenting or offering himself as a musician here)

upgantum—means go near

Poetically translated it would mean

Stems of bamboo with the wind filled hollow,

Emerging from the mouth of his caves,

Wish to be the musician (flutist),

To sing in a high pitch the celestial songs!

(The intended meaning is to tell about the bamboo groves filled Himalaya with its musical winds which was the kingdom  of Himavan, Father of my Mother Parvati)

by a single shot kalidasa achieves many things:

1)    poetical excellence

2)    narration of the birth place appropriate for the Heavenly bodies to reside

3)    arrival of a greater spirit through Parvati Devi

4)    Immortality-Kalidasa is of 5 th century AD; after 1500 years he is remembered for his work by a small person sitting in remote Indor house without even bathing/having a cup of coffee on a Sunday
