Narada Bhakti Sutram Episode 2-- Stanza -1

Embodiments of Love!

We have a variety in what we claim Happiness!

Read this story:

There was a millionaire; he did not have Peace of mind; he converted all his wealth into gold and bundled everything inside a cloth piece and tied it on the top and carried it on his head
He approached a saint who was in deep meditation

He pleaded, “Hey Swami, I want peace of mind! take everything I have here; I just want peace!

Saint opened his eyes from the  so called meditation.

Without asking anything Saint started opening the bundle.
The jewels with gems were reflecting light due to multiple internal reflections!

The saint tied the opening again as it looked earlier; put it on his head and started running.
Oh! The rich man could not understand what was happening! oh no this thief, not saint is running away with my Wealth.

The chase started like Don 1, Don 2 or if you are a lover of John Abraham, Dhoom 1, 2 and 3.

The saint was bodily fit with his diet control and rich man was no match for him in the race.

After several hours of chase, during which the rich man ensured that he has not lost  sight of the saint-thief, the saint-thief reached the same place.

Saint placed the bundle at the same place where it was originally placed.

The rich man also landed at the same spot with water coming out of his mouth and nose and perspiration making a kill of his body.

The rich man opened the bundle to make a rough estimate of the stock; to his astonishment all the jewels were in place.

He started laughing with all his teeth; danced; ecstasy dance indeed!

Saint asked, “Are you Happy? “

Rich man: Yes I am!

Saint: Do you have peace of mind?

Rich man: yes of course! Thank you Sir!

End of the story.

What was the achievement here?

अथातो भक्तिं व्याख्यास्यामः
                                    नारद भक्ति सूत्रम्-----१

                                                                      Narada Bhakti Sutram--1
Word by word meaning

अथ—atha—now
अतः—ataha—therefore
भक्तिम्—bhaktim—doctrine of devotion
व्याख्या—vyaakya---expalin
स्यामः—syaamaha—shall( Sanskrit grammar word for we shall)

Meaning:

Now therefore we shall explain the doctrine of Bhakti

Explanation: this is how Narada starts his aphorism;

The beauty is not a single word is wasted; and subject is brought to the dais abruptly;
Okay, when Narada is the speaker, why he is telling “we shall explain”

to understand this we need to get into Taitriya Upanishad:
आप्यायन्तु ममाङ्गानि वाक्प्राणश्चक्षुः
श्रोत्रमथो बलमिन्द्रियाणि सर्वाणि
सर्वम् ब्रह्मौपनिषदम् माऽहं ब्रह्म
निराकुर्यां मा मा ब्रह्म
निराकरोदनिराकरणमस्त्वनिराकरणम् मेऽस्तु
तदात्मनि निरते
शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः
oṃ āpyāyantu mamāṅgāni vākprāṇaścakṣuḥ
śrotramatho balamindriyāṇi ca sarvāṇi |
sarvam brahmaupaniṣadam mā'haṃ brahma
nirākuryāṃ mā mā brahma
nirākarodanirākaraṇamastvanirākaraṇam me'stu |
tadātmani nirate ya upaniṣatsu dharmāste
mayi santu te mayi santu |
oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ ||
Entire meaning
Om. Let my organs, speech, prana (vital air), eyes, ears, and all my feelings gain strength. In the Upanishads everything is Brahman. Do not let me deny Brahman. Let Brahman not deny me. Let there be no denial of Brahman. Let Brahman not deny anything. Let the virtues of Upanishads endow me with devotion to Atman. Let them be in me. Om peace, peace, peace.

but my focus is on the phrase-- उपनिषत्सु धर्मास्ते मयि सन्तु ते मयि सन्तु

उपनिषत्सु—Upanishadsu—in Upanishads ( here we have to understand as “of upanishads”
धर्म-Dharma—Virtue, morality
आस्ते—Aaste—Inhabit, solemnize
मयि सन्तु mayi santu —let ( them) be in me
मयि सन्तु ते—mayi santu te—let them be in me

so when Narada says, “व्याख्यास्यामः “ we will explain ", probably he is suggesting that it is not only Narada but the Virtues imbibed in him also shall explain.

To drive my point: a non-smoker only has the Right and Moral Authority to advise that Smoking is Injurious, not a chain-smoker!

See you in the next episode
