Unconventional Lover

Embodiments of Love!

The greatest villain and hero (Anti hero) of Treta Yuga ( त्रेता युग-- the second out of four yugas) was the author of this beautiful Sivathandavastotram

My daughter Nandhini is my Guru for this; I have saved her vibrant singing in my mobile and whenever I I walk alone (mostly I am alone only!) I play this and I am about to recite the same by heart at last!

करालभालपट्टिकाधगद्धगद्धगज्ज्वल-
द्धनञ्जयाहुतीकृतप्रचण्डपञ्चसायके |
धराधरेन्द्रनन्दिनीकुचाग्रचित्रपत्रक-
प्रकल्पनैकशिल्पिनि त्रिलोचने रतिर्मम ||||

Karala bhala pattika dhagadhaga jjwala,
Ddhanan jayahuthi krutha prachanda pancha sayage ,
Dharadharendra nandhini kuchagra chithrapathraka,
Prakalpanaika shilpini, trilochane rather mama. 7

भाल—bhAla—forehead or splendor

Literal Meaning for a low level person like me will be as follows:

My interest is in Lord Shiva, the three eyed, who has poured fire on the God of Love with the flaming “Dhagad Dhagad” on his forehead and who is the expert artist drawing colorful designs on the nipple of Parvati, the daughter of the mountain king.


See the contradictory situations; Ravana’s hand was under the mountain when he sang this song; on top of the mountain was my Lord Siva with my Mother Parvati Devi. Ravana mentions that Siva destroyed Cupid with the fire emanating from His eye of Wisdom; at the same time Siva is narrated as a great lover of His wife.

If you just read the meaning outwardly it will look like Siva has been felled by Cupid before himself getting destroyed by Lord Siva; but Sanskrit contributes immensely to elevate this wonderful poem into a higher lever

शिल्पिनी—silpini—female artist –this is the phrase used when Siva is mentioned as playing with His consort; to me it gives 2 different meanings:
1)  here when my Lord and Mother are alone, they are in the unified form (अर्ध नारी—ardhanaari—half woman); again note their unified form is called half woman only and not half Man (अर्धनर​ नास्ति I); so it is not a lustful play that is narrated
2)  Another way of looking at it is: Siva has Ganges inside the matted Lock of hair; the oozing water stream falls on the mountain peak (which is denoted here by nipple) and hence the artist mentioned here could be Ganges.


A person undergoing severe pain due to the hand getting crushed under a mountain could not be enjoying a love scene in his mind’s eye; rather to have solace he was drawing energy from the natural sceneries.

Anyhow Sambo Mahadeva!
This is a poetical beauty!
And Parvathi is Siva’s wife! Who am I to intrude…Sorry Siva, my dear, if I have trespassed!
